Allegations of sexual abuse at Pierceton Woods

Allegations of Sexual Misconduct at Pierceton Woods Academy

Sexually harmful behaviors have been uncovered numerous times at this residential center. Here are some cases involving staff members who mistreated minors or young patients at Pierceton Woods Academy.

Supervisor Has Inappropriate Relationship with Patient

Dena Sue Patel allegedly used her key fob to enter a 19-year-old patient’s living area, taking him on private walks. She told the patient she wanted him and began an inappropriate romantic relationship. This was the third time since 2019 that police or Child Protective Services charged a female staffer at this facility.

In response, the Indiana Department of Child Services halted referrals to the facility, but only for 11 days.

Psychologist Claims at least a Dozen Staff Members Perpetrated or Knew of Sexual Abuse

One teenage boy claimed that a female staffer offered him lollipops and performed oral sex on him. Additionally, dozens of complaints were ignored or overlooked by administrators, though a subsequent DCS investigation revealed that many of these allegations were factual.

For years, staff members failed to report allegations to the DCS because the institution’s policy was to report them up the chain of command. Pierceton Woods Academy, which treats boys with substance use disorders and other behavioral issues, has deep political connections that likely protected it from some of the sexual abuse allegations.

Direct care staff are supposed to provide caring and safe environments for the patients and their families, but the failure to report suspected abuse led to multiple incidents at the facility. Additionally, the DCS continued sending boys to the facility, despite receiving numerous report allegations.
