Roblox Safety Concerns
Roblox safety concerns are rising as millions of Roblox users, many under the age of 18, play, create, and share user-generated content daily. While playing games and online interactions can inspire creativity, they also expose children to inappropriate content, child predators, and financial exploitation through purchases inside the game.
At Injury Lawyer Team, we stand with families affected by harm on digital platforms like Roblox. We believe every child deserves a safe space to play and connect. If your child was exploited or exposed to harmful content while playing Roblox, you’re not alone, we’re here to help protect children and guide families nationwide.

What Are the Risks Associated With Children Playing Roblox?
With over a hundred million daily players, Roblox has become one of the most influential gaming platforms for kids worldwide. Its mix of community-created content, online interactions, and social play attracts kids who want to create, play, and connect with friends in countless types of games.
But this same open environment can expose young users to serious dangers, from unsafe content and child predators to financial exploitation and gambling-like systems hidden in player-created games.
Below are key Roblox statistics from their official Q2 2025 report:
- Hours engaged (“Hoursˮ) were 27.4 billion, up 58% year-over-year.
- Daily active users (“DAUsˮ) were 111.8 million, up 41% year-over-year.
- Monthly Unique Payers (“MUPsˮ) reached a new all-time record of 23.4 million, up 42% over Q2 2024.
These numbers highlight the massive reach of Roblox users, many of them under the age of 18, and why child safety must remain a priority. As Roblox continues to grow and earn hundreds of millions of dollars, parents, regulators, and advocates must remain vigilant about the risks that come with such widespread online communication and access to diverse content.
Sexual Grooming and Abuse
Predators have exploited the openness of Roblox by establishing relationships with kids through voice chat, private messages, friends lists, and trusted connections.
Because Roblox does not require real names, email, or phone verification at sign-up, this anonymity makes it difficult for moderators to distinguish between legitimate minors and disguised predators. The platform’s online interaction tools, designed for creativity and connection, can too easily be exploited by child predators to build trust, share virtual items, and manipulate victims into unsafe or exploitative situations.
Bloomberg’s investigation found that about 40% of Roblox’s daily active users are younger than 13, making a huge portion of the user base especially vulnerable to grooming. The report documented at least two dozen U.S. arrests since 2018 tied to predators who used Roblox to sexually exploit, groom, or abduct children. In one disturbing case, a predator sent messages such as “You’re the reason why I’m gonna end up behind bars” to a 12-year-old.
These online safety statistics and investigations reveal how widespread and persistent the threat has become, underscoring the urgent need for stronger monitoring and identity verification on the platform to better target people who want to harm children.
Sexual Content in Roblox Games
Beyond grooming, children can stumble into explicit content embedded in player-created games, especially games masquerading as harmless “condo” worlds or hangouts.
CBS News uncovered that some Roblox “condo games” expose kids to pornographic scenes, simulated sex acts, romantic themes, and strong language, circumventing moderation filters. In the report, viewers learned that these experiences have slipped past Roblox’s safeguards, sometimes appearing with innocuous game names or reappearing under new versions.
Because Roblox relies heavily on community moderation, many of these games get flagged only after children have already been exposed. In effect, even with content labels or discretion advised tags, unsafe content can infiltrate unless moderation is extremely proactive and effective.
Financial Exploitation Through In-Game Purchases
Roblox’s monetization through Robux provides lucrative opportunities for developers, but also pathways for exploitation of young players. Children often don’t fully grasp the exchange value between real-life money and virtual currency, making them vulnerable to overspending.
A University of Sydney study in 2025 focused on children aged 7–14 found that 12 out of 22 children interviewed made purchases in Roblox using a provided real-money debit card, sometimes describing the monetization system as “scams” or “cash grabs.” The report found that much of Roblox’s US$3.6 billion 2024 revenue was generated through in-game microtransactions.
Moreover, despite loot box bans in Australia for users under 15, the study observed that Roblox still offered randomized reward features. Because these features obscure actual cost and condition children to gamble-like spending, they straddle the line between gaming and exploitation.
The BBC reported real cases of kids in Wales running up bills in the thousands of pounds on Robux before parents realized. In some instances, Roblox’s refund policies and parental controls did little to reverse the transactions.
Loot Boxes Promoting Gambling
One of the most concerning monetization mechanics are loot boxes. These are systems where players spend money or virtual currency for randomized virtual rewards, akin to pulling a slot machine.
According to an ACM study, randomized reward systems correlate with gambling-like behavior in minors, especially when combined with spending incentives. While the study doesn’t always isolate Roblox alone, it includes Roblox among platforms where these systems are embedded in community-created content.
Complementary research shows that loot boxes are used by nearly 40% of children gaming, and that a small share of users (around 5%) contribute disproportionately to revenue through repetitive purchases. The strong association between purchases in games and symptoms of problem gambling has been observed across multiple studies.
Because Roblox supports player-created games and allows monetization by independent developers, some worlds may embed unplayable gambling content or push random items under the radar of moderation, all while encouraging kids to spend real-world dollars in their own games.

What Is Roblox Studio’s Response to Child Safety Concerns?
As concerns about child safety on Roblox continue to grow, the company has expanded its safety programs, moderation systems, and parental tools. While Roblox Studio empowers creators to design immersive community-created content, it also bears responsibility for ensuring that children and teens are protected from exploitation, explicit content, and unsafe interactions.
Roblox safety initiatives have outlined its commitment to improving safety through advanced moderation technologies, age verification systems, and new features designed to give parents more control over how their children play and communicate on the platform.
These include updates to parental consent and controls, age estimation, and enhanced content moderation efforts aimed at detecting and removing harmful or adult-oriented material.
Parental Controls
In late 2024, Roblox introduced major updates to its safety systems and parental controls, allowing parents to manage account settings more precisely.
Parents can now set limits on voice chat, friend requests, in-game purchases, and which types of games their children can access. They also receive clearer visibility into activity logs, helping them understand how much time their child spends playing Roblox and what player-created games they’re engaging with.
These new controls are designed to promote parental supervision and safer digital boundaries across millions of users.
Age Estimation
In September 2025, Roblox announced plans to expand age estimation to all users, aiming to strengthen content filtering and age-appropriate experiences across the platform.
Using a combination of completing ID verification and facial analysis, the system helps ensure that users under the age of 13 are restricted from accessing diverse content containing adult themes, explicit language, or moderate violence.
The feature also allows developers to label community-created content with content descriptors like “discretion advised” or “parental guidance recommended,” creating a safer environment for younger audiences.
Inappropriate Content Detection and Removal
Roblox continues to expand its automated systems for detecting restricted content, including sexually explicit material, heavy realistic blood, strong violence, and harmful content in user-created games.
Moderators and AI tools now review billions of lines of chat and millions of new uploads daily, aiming to flag unplayable gambling content, revealing reality themes, or light realistic blood before they reach kids. Despite these improvements, the scale of community-created content means violations still occur.
Roblox platform’s chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, has emphasized that ongoing investment in new safety features such as AI moderation, human review, and better trusted connections between players remains essential to protect children and maintain community trust.
What Legal Avenues Are There for Victims of Abuse and Exploitation on the Roblox Gaming Platform?
When a child is groomed, coerced, or exploited through Roblox, the law allows families to pursue both civil and federal remedies. Survivors can file a Roblox lawsuit against individual perpetrators, as well as companies that failed to provide adequate child safety protections or ignored signs of abuse.
Under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (18 U.S.C. § 1595), victims of online exploitation can sue abusers and any platform that knowingly benefited from the misconduct. Many states have also expanded or eliminated statutes of limitations for child sexual abuse, allowing survivors to come forward later under the delayed discovery rule.
Victims may recover compensation for emotional trauma, therapy costs, lost opportunities, and punitive damages. We stand with survivors and their families, helping them seek justice and hold negligent platforms accountable for failing to protect children online.
